Wausaukee topples Coleman, Lena in M&O twinbill

    2024-05-07

WAUSAUKEE — The Wausaukee High School baseball team pulled double duty Monday, traveling to Coleman for a showdown with the Cougars before dashing home for a matchup against Lena.

The unusual nature of the afternoon mattered little to the Rangers, as Wausaukee emerged victorious in both contests, first taking down Coleman 4-1 before vanquishing the Wildcats 8-6.

Coleman grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to an RBI from Logan Kurth but were otherwise held in check by Wausaukee’s pitching duo of Callahan Betts and Evan Suennen, who combined to give up just six hits and four walks through seven innings.

Wausaukee grabbed a one-run lead in the top of the second and doubled up with a crooked number in the top of the third.

None of the Rangers’ four runs against the Cougars were earned, as Wausaukee capitalized on four errors to hand Coleman its second Marinette and Oconto Conference loss of the season.

Suennen, Conner Schroeder and Ryan Wojcik all had two hits for Wausaukee.

Wyatt Bieber went 1-3 at the plate with a double for Coleman. Cole Berth collected two hits in four trips to the dish, while Logan Lamine and Brady Dufeck both added base knocks.

Gavin Pusick was the losing pitcher after permitting six hits and four unearned runs in three innings of work, although he did strike out four Wausaukee batters.

Wausaukee capped off Monday’s twinbill with a come-from-behind victory over Lena, with Kayden Suennen and Seth Kraemer both tallying two-RBI performances for a Rangers offense that narrowly out-hit the Wildcats 7-6.

Lena jumped ahead 5-2 in the top of the fourth but it would not hold the advantage for long, as the Rangers plated five runs in the bottom of the frame to claim a two-run edge.

Wausaukee tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, which proved to be the difference after Lena scratched across a run in the top of seventh to make it a one-run game.

Logan Graef and Anthony Seefeldt both had two ribbies for the Wildcats.

Tyler Shallow took the loss on the mound after allowing four hits, seven runs, six of which were earned and four walks over three-and-one-third innings pitched.

Rojcik picked up the win with one hit, one unearned run and three strikeouts in three and one-third innings of work.
