Urgent recall issued for candy sold in multiple states including Wisconsin

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is upgrading a recall of nearly two dozen candy and snack products sold at major retailers in Wisconsin and other states amid salmonella contamination concerns.

The FDA upgraded the recall to a Class I Level, which means “there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to…(the) product will cause serious adverse health consequence or death.”

The candies and snacks were produced by Palmer Candy Co., which is based in Sioux City, Iowa. An initial recall began in May after the FDA announced the white candy coatings on the company’s pretzels, cookies, and other miscellaneous snacks had been contaminated.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can spread cause serious or even fatal infections in young children as well as elderly people, or those with weakened immune systems, according to the CDC.

Palmer Candy CEO Marty Palmer said an investigation is underway and production has halted.

The recalled products were distributed nationwide in Dollar General, Hy-Vee, Target, Walmart, and Dollar Tree retailers in 17 states including Wisconsin.

Salmonella can cause fever, stomach pains and diarrhea. It is the most common form of food poisoning with symptoms that typically last from four to seven days, according to the CDC.
