A suspect who allegedly fired multiple shots at police during a chase early Tuesday is in custody, according to the Wood County Sheriff’s Department.

The situation unfolded as the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department responded to a report of a domestic disturbance. One person fled the scene in a vehicle and was located by a Portage County Sheriff’s deputy on Hwy. 54. The suspect refused to pull over for the deputy and allegedly shot at officers multiple times and struck squad cars, officials said.

The vehicle was disabled near the area of East Grand Avenue and 8th Street in Wisconsin Rapids, where the suspect fled on foot. Using a drone, officers found the suspect on a rooftop, where the continued to take fire. Officers returned fire and captured the suspect, who was taken to an area hospital for treatment. His condition has not been specified.

The suspect’s name has not been released.

Police say there is no active threat to the community, but they ask the public to avoid the area as the investigation continues. The Department of Criminal Investigation is spearheading the investigation.
