A 43-year-old Waupaca man is facing felony drunken driving charges after an alleged hit-and-run crash on I-39, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol’s Wausau Post.

In a news release, police said the driver, Shaun M. Novakavich, struck a cable barrier in the median at about 7 p.m. Saturday on I-39 near Stevens Point and fled the scene. Novakavich continued northbound on I-39 and was intercepted by a trooper hear Hwy. 10.

Novakavich allegedly failed field sobriety tests and was arrested on charges of fifth-offense operating while intoxicated and failing to notify police of a property damage crash.

Novakavich is also being held at the Portage Co. Jail on an order to detain issued by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, Division of Community Corrections.

You are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
