The Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans announced this week its Save Social Security actions across Wisconsin this summer and fall. Social Security celebrated its 89th birthday in early August.

The WIARA, partnered with the American Federation of Government Employees Council 220, will demonstrate in front of Wisconsin Social Security field offices demanding that Social Security be protected, modernized and expanded. American Federation of Government Employees President Jessica LaPointe reports the Social Security Agency is severely under-staffed and under-funded, and a 27-year low in staffing has caused out of control workloads.

The schedule (All events begin at noon.)

Wausau: Today, Aug. 27, 352 Grand Ave.

Eau Claire: Sept. 19, 4120 Oakwood Hills Parkway

Racine: To be scheduled. 4020 Durand Ave.

Wisconsin Rapids: Oct. 8, 2213 Eighth St. S.

Madison: Oct. 29, 6011 Odana Road

La Crosse: Nov. 4, 210 Seventh St. S.

According to Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans:

Currently, once you make $168,600, you no longer pay into FICA. The groups are asking to have that cap raised to $400,000.

There is a possibility that by 2035 Americans could see only 83 percent of benefits paid out to Social Security and Social Security disability if this continues. Americans should see an increase in benefits now, up to $200 more per month for COLA (cost of living adjustment).

At this action, demonstrators stand in front of Social Security Field offices, holding signs and hearing from speakers. These events will last about one hour.

What they need to do is stop the government from taking our Social Security fund. They don’t have a right to it.
