    Wausau West girls tennis opens WVC season with close win over SPASH

    WAUSAU – The defending Wisconsin Valley Conference champion Wausau West girls tennis team opened its conference slate with a 4-3 win over Stevens Point on Thursday at West High School.

    Mia Bailey (No. 1 singles), Lilly Wittwer (No. 2 singles), Emily Lucht (No. 4 singles) and the No. 1 doubles team of Rachel Harder and Mallory Smogoleski won matches in straight sets for the Warriors.

    Last weekend, West hosted a two-day invitational on Aug. 30-31 and finished with a 4-1 record. The Warriors defeated Antigo 6-1, Pulaski 4-3, Madison Memorial 5-2 and Chippewa Falls 4-3, and lost to Wisconsin Rapids 4-3.

    The Warriors will be back in action Tuesday at Wisconsin Rapids.

    Doubles: 1. Rachel Harder-Mallory Smogoleski (WW) def. Mali Palmer-Emma Ekstrand, 6-3, 6-0; 2. KayBri Marchel-Elizabeth Fish (SP) def. Stella Olson-Carmen Ghidorzi, 6-4, 6-1; 3. Haley Champeau-Elaine Titus (SP) def. Layne Fuller-Sophia Cotey, 6-4, 0-6, 7-5.
