Two hay wagons carrying children and adults rolled over at a Chippewa Falls apple orchard, injuring at least 25 people, officials said Wednesday.

The rollovers happened Wednesday at Bushel and a Peck Apple Orchard, 18444 County Hwy OO, Chippewa Falls.

A group of 4K and 5K students from St. Mark Lutheran School in Eau Claire were on a field trip when the wagons, which were being pulled by a tractor, rolled over, Chippewa Fire District Deputy Chief Corey Jeffers said.

Due to the large number of patients at the scene first responders enacted mass casualty protocol, placing area emergency services and hospitals on alert. Multiple ambulances and at least one Mayo Clinic helicopter were at the scene, according to witness reports. Officials said 25 people were taken to hospitals, but the total number of people injured was estimated at about 30.

Jeffers was unable to specify how many of the injured people are children. The severity of their injuries is unclear at this time. All children have been reunited with their families.

No fatalities have been reported. This is a developing story.

The Pilot often relies on reports from police officials in control of a crime, fire or crash scene during a breaking news event. While these initial reports are valuable to readers, they also can be incomplete and even inaccurate. We let readers know what we can and can’t confirm, as well as when and how we received our information. Then we work to aggressively gather a wider range of perspectives and to verify the information through public records, interviews, photos and videos, all of which are verified before publishing.
