    Wausau West wins three flights at Wisconsin Valley Conference Girls Tennis Tournament, ties for overall title

    WAUSAU – Wausau West won a pair of singles titles and also placed first at No. 1 doubles as it placed third at the 2024 Wisconsin Valley Conference Girls Tennis Tournament on Thursday at Wausau East High School.

    Combined with the points earned during the regular-season dual meets, West tied Wisconsin Rapids for the overall WVC championship. Wausau West won the outright title in 2023.

    Wisconsin Rapids and Marshfield tied for the team title at the tournament, with West third, D.C. Everest fifth and Wausau East sixth. East ended up fifth in the final overall standings with D.C. Everest sixth.

    Mia Bailey took the No. 1 singles title and Lilly Wittwer won the No. 2 singles crown for the Warriors. West’s No. 1 doubles team of Mallory Smogoleski and Rachel Harder also won the conference championship for the Warriors as they defeated Lucy Luedtke and Isabel Krueger of Marshfield, 6-1, 6-2, in the finals.

    Elizabeth Chan placed third at No. 3 singles for Wausau East’s top finish.

    All three of D.C. Everest’s doubles teams placed third – Qiarie Burns and Emily Ringwelski at No. 1, Izabel Lezcano and Kali Rutta at No. 2, and Brynn Kampmann and Sheila Lee at No. 3.

    Wausau East, Wausau West and D.C. Everest will all compete at a WIAA Division 1 subsectional on Monday at Rhinelander. The sectional meet is Wednesday at the Menard Tennis Center in Eau Claire.

    Championship: Lilly Wittwer (WW) def. Abbey Gust (WR), 6-0, 6-1.

    Third place: Mali Palmer (SP) def. Talia Schlindwein (WE), 6-4, 6-1.

    Fifth place: Brooklyn Costa (DC) def. Maddie Kundinger (MAR), 6-2, 6-2.

    Championship: Sydney Holberg (WR) def. Talia Soskos (MAR), 6-0, 6-1.

    Third place: Elizabeth Chan (WE) def. Emily Lucht (WW), 7-5, 6-3.

    Fifth place: Kayla Peterman (SP) def. Claire Hintz (MER), 6-0, 6-1.

    Championship: Halle Rachu (MAR) def. Layla Wesolek (WR), 6-3, 5-7, 10-5.

    Third place: Carmen Ghidorzi (WW) def. Kelsie Kerchefski (SP), 6-4, 6-1.
