    Newman Catholic girls tennis sweeps matches as all seven move on to WIAA Division 2 sectionals

    MINOCQUA – The entire Newman Catholic team will be moving on to sectionals after competition at a WIAA Division 2 girls tennis subsectional on Monday at Lakeland High School.

    Those reaching the semifinals in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, and players reaching the finals in all other flights, qualify for the Division 2 sectional back at Lakeland High School on Wednesday.

    All seven of Newman Catholic’s entrants won matches to qualify for sectionals.

    Reagan Hedrich won 6-0, 6-0, over Amanda Angelo of Phillips at No. 1 singles, and Addie Schmitt (No. 2), Emma Larrain (No. 3) and Brecklyn Lindner (No. 4) each won two matches in straight sets for the Cardinals.

    Newman’s three doubles teams also won all of its matches in straight sets. Moving on are the No. 1 team of Molly Merrill and Evelyn Herdrich, the No. 2 team of Naomi Stenstrom and Fiona MacCarthy, and the No. 3 team of Addison Puent and Abby Hynes.

    The top four finishers at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, and the top finisher at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles will automatically qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Individual Girls Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, which will be held Oct. 17-19. The top team in the sectional moves on to the 2024 WIAA State Team Girls Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison on Oct. 25-26.
