Wauwatosa police are investigating an armed robbery attempt that resulted in a shootout at a gas station by Mayfair Road and Capitol Drive.

A 39-year-old man is in serious condition at a hospital after exchanging gunfire with people who attempted to steal his vehicle, according to a release from the Wauwatosa Police Department.

At 2:59 a.m. Friday, Wauwatosa's 911 center received a call from the man who reported he'd been shot at the gas station while he was pumping gas.

He had also been carrying a firearm, and after a shootout, the suspects fled the scene, while the 39-year-old was treated for gunshot wounds and transported to a hospital by the Wauwatosa Fire Department.

At the same time, a nearby officer who heard the gunshots and saw a white sedan rapidly driving away from the intersection pursued the vehicle, which shortly after crashed into a street sign at 110th and Congress streets.

Multiple people ran from the vehicle, and Wauwatosa police arrested an 18-year-old man from Milwaukee after searching the area with the assistance of the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, City of Brookfield Police Department and West Allis Police Department.

The suspect's vehicle had been reported as stolen to Milwaukee police on July 24, according to the release.

The status of the other suspects is unknown.

Wauwatosa police say they are working to verify that the vehicle officers pursued is related to the robbery and shooting incident. They are also seeking witnesses and evidence from both crime scenes.

Anyone who has doorbell footage or other video evidence from their home in the areas of Mayfair Road and Capitol Drive or 110th Street and Congress Street, or who has information related to these incidents, is asked to contact the Wauwatosa Police Department at 414-471-8430.
