More students head back to school in Hampton Roads

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Back to school season is in full swing. On August 26, more kids in Hampton Roads are heading back to the classroom. The roads will be full of school buses and backpacks will be full of school supplies.

One rising senior at Churchland High School in Portsmouth gave some advice to younger students.

“Take advantage of the moment,” said Lindsay Goodwin. “Just enjoy it. I know it can be hard sometimes, but just take a breather when you can and just try your best.”

10 On Your Side talked to students who said they are nervous, but excited for their first day. Each one said they are prepared to go back, they are ready for the early start and their back to school shopping is done.

“I got a new backpack yesterday, which I’m super excited about, and I have custom notepads,” said Abby Drumm, a 7th grader.

From middle school, to high school, and even Pre-K all students, all are excited to see their friends. 10 On Your Side wants to remind people to watch out for school zones and prepare for heavier traffic than usual due to drop off, school buses and walkers.

Accomack, Chesapeake and Isle of Wight public schools start on Sept. 3. A lot of school districts, including Virginia Beach, start school on Monday, Aug. 26.
