School year in Hampton begins with camera enforcement

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — The City of Hampton encourages drivers to slow down in school zones.

In a social media post, the city announced that starting Monday, Aug. 26 camera enforcement will go into effect at Hampton High School, Bethel High School and Andrews Pre-K-8, during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.

The date coincided with the first day of school for the district.

City leaders hope the traffic cameras will cut down on speeding near schools.

Drivers will receive a warning during the 30-day grace period. Once the grace period ends, drivers could face a $100 fine for speeding near school zones.

Other school zone cameras will go online in September, on the following dates:

• Kecoughtan High School on Sept. 9
• Jones Magnet School on Sept. 20
• Lindsay Middle School and Machen Elementary School on Sept. 30
