HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Virginia State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash at the HRBT that left someone with life-threatening injuries Thursday morning.

Police said the incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. inside the westbound side of the HRBT.

According to officials, the driver of a 2017 Lexus SUV, later identified as 22-year-old Trinity Iris Downs, was traveling westbound when she lost control of the vehicle, crashing into the jersey wall.

Downs was then transferred to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said charges are pending.

Photos from the scene show the front-end damage to the SUV inside of the tunnel.

All west lanes were closed on I-64 at the HRBT due to the crash and drivers inside of the tunnel were asked to reverse and exit the tunnel in order for crews to clear the road. All lanes have since reopened.
