CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — A pursuit involving the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office Saturday evening ended with a deputy firing his weapon, officials confirmed.

According to the sheriff’s office, around 5:40 p.m., they were alerted that several drivers were speeding, running red lights and passing other vehicles in the turn lane in the vicinity of Caratoke Highway, in the Poplar Branch area.

Deputies tracked down the vehicles and tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the group kept going.

A pursuit ensued, eventually leading to Worth Guard Road, in Coinjock. At the end of the dead end street, the deputy fired his weapon, striking someone in one of the vehicles. The suspect was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital via air ambulance and is currently listed in stable condition.

A neighbor witnessed the events and said he saw two BMWs speeding down the street, followed by police. The neighbor said he heard a couple gunshots ring out. One of the BMWs came to a stop outside the neighbor’s house. He saw the driver taken into custody.

He wanted to remain anonymous, but told WAVY, “They still have a lot of police cars. But at that time it was only one – the one who was chasing him. When he got out of the car, that’s when he got arrested.”

This remains an active investigation. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is now assisting.
