MANTEO, N.C. (WAVY) — Cape Hatteras National Seashore strongly recommended that travelers avoid the north end of Ocracoke Island during the high tide Monday evening, with North Carolina’s Department of Transportation closing off NC 12 on part of the island and suspending ferry service.

NCDOT said it closed NC 12 on Ocracoke from the ferry terminal to the pony pens “until further notice,” and it also suspended ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke.

Those visiting Hatteras Island are urged to use caution on the beach at the north end of Rodanthe due to the presence of hazards, such as building materials and parts of septic systems from oceanfront structures.

Additionally, varying levels of ocean overwash in Hatteras, Buxton and Rodanthe and possibly near the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge visitor center.

Those traveling on the north end of Ocracoke Island around high tides should use caution throughout the remainder of the week.
