PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Virginia State Parks are set to celebrate National Public Lands Day on Sept. 28.

Parks across the Commonwealth are expected to host a variety of volunteer activities — including removing invasive species and cleaning beaches and trails to celebrate the holiday.

According to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation , there is a state park within an hour for every Virginian to explore.

In 2023, volunteers across 130 national parks totaled more than 41,000 hours of volunteer service for the event.

To celebrate the holiday, Virginia State Parks will also offer free parking.
