NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A former U.S. Postal Service mail carrier pleaded guilty to improperly destroying mail.

Court documents show that on Dec. 9, 2023, 31-year-old Michael Thirkield, of Hampton, dumped several boxes of mail into a dumpster in the Forest Lake Court area in Newport News.

That was the last day Thirkield showed up for work. He left his USPS satchel on his porch with a handwritten note stating, “For the mail carrier.”

Two days later, a USPS customer service supervisor was able to recover 1,296 pieces of first-class and pre-sorted mail from the dumpster.

Thirkield faces up to five years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 26, 2025.

Don’t forget to mail in your election ballots, folks! It’s easier, you don’t even need to leave your home, and it (might, hopefully, fingers crossed) get there and be counted. What’s their slogan? “Do more with your mail!”Ridiculous.

My mail carrier just refuses to pick up my mail. I have to call the post master, now, when I need something picked up so that he knows when she's not doing her job. If I'm going to help manage this situation, maybe I should be paid for it? The PO is really struggling right now to complete basic tasks. It's painful to watch, and my customers aren't happy about it either as they have to wait longer and longer to receive their packages.
