    Death toll raises to 10 in Listeria outbreak from VA-based Boar’s Head

    PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The death toll for a nationwide Listeria outbreak linked to Virginia-based Boar’s Head deli meat is officially in double digits, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC.

    Since the last update on Aug. 28, the CDC confirmed two more illnesses and one more death reported. The latest death comes from an individual in New York.

    As of Sept. 25, there have been a total of 59 people infected from 19 states. All 59 had to be hospitalized and there were 10 deaths. Popular groceries such as Target, Kroger, Safeway and Jewel were among the retailers that carried the contaminated deli meat.

    WAVY has covered this outbreak extensively as the company linked to this multi-state outbreak had was based out of Virginia.

    Boar’s Head indefinitely closed their Virginia plant a couple weeks ago amid the fallout and has been slammed with lawsuits, including at least three locally. One of these lawsuits comes from the family of an 88-year-old Newport News man and Holocaust survivor after he was among those who died following the outbreak.

    On the same day the company announced the closure of its Virginia facility, they also announced the discontinuation of the liverwurst deli meal .
