Local trichologist talks importance of Alopecia Awareness Month

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — September is recognized as Alopecia Awareness Month, and if you or a loved one is dealing with hair loss, there is a Virginia Beach trichologist ready to help you.

Growing up in her mother’s hair salon, Dr. Prenik James Obasuyi always knew hair and helping others was her calling.

“Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss,” she said, “In the United States alone, there are about 35 million men suffering from hair loss and over 21 million women.”

She expects that number to grow, as there are more than 10 kinds of alopecia. As an internationally certified trichologist, she said trichology is the branch between cosmetology and dermatology

“Hair ministry is what I do, so my mission and my passion is for those suffering from hair loss to be restored,” James Obasuyi said.

“Multi-therapy, meaning we start inner, getting to the root cause of what’s going on, then we treat topically ,and then I use various machines and tools,” she said.
