YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A man has been arrested after an assault on law enforcement in York County, authorities say.

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office says Emeril Carpenter, who already had warrants for his arrest out of Gloucester, hurt deputies with his car as he tried to get away from them early Thursday morning.

Deputies say Carpenter was spotted with scrap metal behind a restoration business, and when he was confronted and notified of the warrant, Carpenter refused to leave the car.

When deputies tried to pull him out, Carpenter put the vehicle in drive and took off, striking two deputies and their vehicle. One deputy’s arm was still in the car at the time, causing him to be dragged a short distance.

Deputies pursued Carpenter’s car, which eventually pulled into an abandoned house. He ultimately was able to elude deputies and a K9 unit.

Around 11 a.m., Carpenter was spotted near Patriot’s Square Shopping Center by deputies. After another foot pursuit Carpenter was located in the 400 block of Allen Harris Drive, where he was then taken into custody.

Carpenter is now being held in the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
