SURF CITY, N.C. (WNCT) — October 1st marks the first day a unique local auction will be taking place.

The coastal town of Surf City will be auctioning off beach access flags. A total of 99 flags will be available, creating an opportunity for people to have a piece of Surf City history with their favorite beach access flags.

“Locals, beachgoers, tourists from all over the place come here to Surf City and they fall in love with our beaches and find their beach accesses that they go to each year,” Surf City Public Information Officer Kellie Cannon said.

The flags are also going to all be unique as beach weather and wind take a toll on them.

“Because of the constant wind we have at the coast, these flags have sustained some damage, so they are not in perfect condition,” Cannon said. “Some are in really good condition and some look like they may have had a shark attack.”

Some people like Mike Favreau think the flag auctions will be a neat addition for people who have been coming to the beaches for years.

“It’s cool for the locals who have been here and gone to these accesses for years or for families who travel in and have fond memories so it’s a nice keepsake to take home and bring a piece of Surf City with them,” Favreau said.

Bids on the flags will begin Oct. 1.
