NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, the Newport News Police Department is set to participate in several events to raise awareness.

NNPD is set to launch awareness efforts by sponsoring a city-wide donation drive to aid survivors of domestic violence. The items will go to Transitions Family Violence Services, who will use them to assist survivors of domestic violence. An approved list of items that can be donated during October will be found below along with multiple drop-off locations throughout the city:

The NNPD will also participate in a city-wide “Go Purple Day” on Thursday, Oct. 17. Citizens are encouraged to wear purple to show solidarity with survivors of domestic violence. The national day of action helps raise awareness and assures survivors they are not alone.

Lastly, NNPD is set to hold a Domestic Violence Awareness Walk on Wednesday, Oct. 23. The walk will begin at City Center at 5 p.m. and is open to the public. The public is once again encouraged to wear purple for the event as it serves as a symbol of peace, courage, survival, honor and personal dedication to domestic violence awareness.

The NNPD Domestic Violence Team will be holding various additional outreach events during October as well. For more information on the Domestic Violence Awareness Month events, please contact the NNPD DV Team at nnpddvteam@nnva.gov .
