HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – A Yorktown woman was sentenced to five years and 15 days in prison on Tuesday after a vehicle crash last year killed a VDOT safety service patroller .

According to officials, on Oct. 8 around 1:17 a.m., 52-year-old Craig Boone pulled over on I-64 eastbound in Hampton at the Big Bethel overpass to assist a disabled vehicle.

While Boone was outside assisting, Alana F. Diomande, then 27, ran off the road, sideswiping the VDOT truck and hitting Boone, police said. Boone was killed on impact.

Police said Diomande had to be removed from the scene for blood withdrawal as she would not comply with officers. She was ultimately taken to Hampton City Jail, where she was charged with driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter, obstruction and curse and abuse.

Court records revealed Diomande had a blood alcohol level of 0.133 percent — the legal limit in Virginia is 0.08 percent.

During the sentencing, the Commonwealth’s Attorney requested a sentence over the guideline due to how bad the incident was, but the defense argued for some leniency due to Diomande’s military service.

A judge ultimately sentenced Diomande to an active 5 years and 15 days in prison, substance abuse counseling, a suspended license and a $1000 fine after stating she saw “a lot of remorse.”
