NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The MacArthur Memorial is getting ready to celebrate the Lafayette Bicentennial with a free film screening next Thursday.

According to a release, on Oct. 17 starting at 7 p.m., MacArthur Memorial will screen ‘Lafayette, the Lost Hero’ as part of their partnership with the Norfolk Chapter of the American Friends of Lafayette.

The film will explore the life of Marquis De Lafayette, an American Revolutionary War hero who left France at the age of 19, helped to fight for the independence of the United States and was an abolitionist.

On Oct. 22, 1824, Lafayette visited Norfolk after being invited by then president James Monroe, who believed Lafayette’s visit would help to unify the county during a contentious presidential election. Norfolk historian and writer George Holbert Tucker said it was a “never-to-be-forgotten” visit.
