PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — WalletHub recently compiled a list of the safest cities in the U.S. in 2024. The study examined more than 180 cities across 41 key indicators of safety, including traffic fatalities, assaults per capita, unemployment rate and percentage of the population that is uninsured.
Some cities in the Hampton Roads area make an appearance on the list.
Virginia Beach was ranked the tenth safest city in America. Chesapeake follows closely behind at No. 13. Newport News appears further down the list at No. 87. Norfolk is the last city in the Hampton Roads area to appear on the list at No. 98.

I actually looked up crime maps for Norfolk and Newport News. Newport News is consistently mostly red whereas Norfolk has small areas of red but it's mostly beige meaning property crimes. The worst area in Norfolk is by MacArthur Center.
