Norfolk students to sign anti-gun violence pledge

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Norfolk students will join kids from across the country on Wednesday in promising to put safety first.

It’s all for the Day of National Concern about Young People and Gun Violence, as well as the distribution of the Student Pledge.

According to the Day of National Concern’s website , the pledge honors the role young people are able to play in reducing violence.

The student pledge started in 1996 after being unanimously supported by U.S. Senate Resolution and Presidential Proclamation, and has continued every year since. Over 10 million students have signed the pledge since its introduction.

This comes just two months after an 18-year-old from Norfolk was fatally shot in the 5100 block of E. Virginia Beach Boulevard.

The founder of Hampton Roads Mothers Against Senseless Killings and the regional lead of Voices of Black Mothers United will help facilitate the pledges.
