Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office warns residents of counterfeit currency

PASQUOTANK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — The Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office has reported a recent rise in the circulation of counterfeit currency.

At first glance, the fake bills look real, but upon they lack the security features of legal U.S. tender.

The sheriff’s office recommends the following tips to avoid the counterfeit currency:

• Inspect Bills Carefully: Take a moment to examine any cash you receive. Look for security features such as watermarks, security threads, color-shifting ink and raised printing. If something looks off, trust your instincts and investigate further.
• Be Vigilant During Transactions: Whether you’re receiving change from a cashier or conducting a private transaction, remain vigilant. Verify the authenticity of bills before completing any exchanges.
• Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter counterfeit currency or suspect someone is involved in its distribution, please report it to local law enforcement immediately. Your cooperation is crucial in combating this criminal activity.
