Rep. Bobby Scott announces $4 million for Elizabeth River deepening project

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Rep. Bobby Scott announced the delivery of $4 million in community project funding to deepen the Elizabeth River and Southern Branch, a move that aims to increase the Port of Virginia’s capacity and boost economic growth in the Hampton Roads region.

The funds , secured through the Consolidated Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2024, will be used by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin preliminary engineering and design work. The project will deepen the river’s 40-foot channel to 45 feet in some sections and 42 feet in others. Additionally, a portion of the Southern Branch’s 35-foot channel will be deepened to 39 feet.

Scott said the funding will allow larger vessels to navigate the waterway more efficiently and fully load, making the Port of Virginia more competitive on a global scale.

Col. Sonny B. Avichal of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District echoed Scott’s optimism, noting the economic impact the project will have on the region.

“The ships that come through will be larger, filled with more goods and commerce, and in turn, stimulate more economic interest in the region,” Avichal said.

Scott secured the funding with support from Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine.

While environmental impact studies are yet to be conducted, Scott expressed confidence that the project will move forward without major issues.
