    Former High Point University soccer player Holden Trent dies at 25

    HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — Greensboro native and former High Point University soccer player Holden Trent has died after a brief hospital stay, his family announced in a statement on Facebook. He was 25.

    In a statement posted to the HPU men’s soccer Facebook page on Thursday, his family said he was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday.

    Yesterday, Holden was admitted to the ICU. We ask that everyone keep Holden in your thoughts and prayers. We will continue to update everyone as we learn more. Love, Holden’s Family

    The family announced his death in another Facebook post to the HPU men’s soccer page on Saturday afternoon.

    We want to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Holden passed away this afternoon surrounded by his family and friends. Details on services and celebration of life are forthcoming. Our family is deeply touched to see and experience the love you all have for Holden. Love, Holden’s Family

    At the time of his death, Trent was the goalkeeper for Philadelphia Union, a professional soccer club.

    PU said the following on Facebook .

    The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking passing of Holden Trent. While he was a wonderful player and fierce competitor, he was more importantly a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who made those around him better. He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication and perseverance, and he will be deeply missed. We extend our greatest sympathies to his family, his fiancé, and his friends.

    Out of respect to Holden’s friends and family, there will be no further statements at this time and ask that their privacy is respected as they grieve.

    During their match Friday evening against Presbyterian College, HPU honored Trent by taking a photo with his PU jersey. HPU won the game 2-1.

    During his time at HPU, Trent was an HPU Millis Scholar-Athlete. His senior year, he helped the team win its first NCAA tournament.
