Woman Arrested for Child’s Death, Injuring Another in Wayne County
FAIRFIELD – A woman has been arrested in connection with the death of one child and injuring another in Wayne County. According to Illinois State Police, Fairfield Police contacted ISP’s Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 8 to assist in the death investigation of a 1-year-old boy and the severe injury of a 2-year-old boy in the 1200 block of Illinois Avenue in Fairfield around 7:40 Sunday night.
Section of I-64 named “Deputy Sean Riley Memorial Highway”
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – A ceremony was held to honor a fallen deputy with naming a section of U.S. Interstate 64. Deputy Sean Riley was the officer shot in the line of duty in Wayne County on December 2021. On Tuesday morning, the unveiling of the name was shown at the Willow Creek Event Venue.
ILLINOIS STATE POLICE, WAYNE COUNTY CORONER’S OFFICE RELEASE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE ARREST OF A FAIRFIELD WOMAN
Illinois State Police Zone 8 Division of Criminal Investigation and the Wayne County Coroner’s Office was called by the Fairfield Police Department just after 7:30 Sunday night to assist in the death investigation of a 1-year-old male and the severe injury of a 2-year-old male in the 1200 block of Illinois Avenue. Both children were found inside a hot vehicle. Wayne County Ambulance personnel rushed both children to Fairfield Memorial Hospital where the 1-year-old was pronounced dead. The 2-year-old brother was airlifted to a regional trauma center in critical condition. Just before 2 o’clock Monday morning, Fairfield Police arrested 36-year-old Aydreian Hooper on a charge of Endangering the Life or Health of a Child. Hooper was transported and lodged in the Wayne County Jail. Illinois State Police Zone 8 and the Wayne County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate this incident. States Attorney Kevin Kakac says additional charges are pending.
Man Found Sitting in Vehicle Arrested on Drug Charges

Wayne Counry Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a strange vehicle sitting in the area County Road 1500 Noeth and County Highway 12. On Saturday at 1:20 PM, officers located 39-year-old George Rankin the 6th. According to deputies, Rankin appeared to be having complications from suspected drug use. Wayne City Ambulance personnel transported Rankin to Fairfield Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. Deputies discovered Rankin was in possession of approximately 19 grams of methamphetamine. After being released by the emergency room staff Rankin was placed under arrest and transported to the Wayne County Jail where he awaits a detainment hearing.
Wayne County Democrats to Meet Wednesday
The Wayne County Democratic Party will meet Wednesday at 6:30pm at the Fairfield Elks Lodge. On the agenda are the organizing of upcoming events including a free Tropical Sno hour at the Fairfield Public Pool & a booth at the Fairfield Fall Fun Fest. Members will also be presented with information from the Southern Illinois Democratic Summit which was held in Mt Vernon on June 29th. This meeting is open to the public and invite those interested to attend.
Hammock Found Guilty
It took a jury of 9 men and 3 women an hour and 10 minutes to find Jason Hammock guilty on both counts of predatory sexual assault of a minor under the age of 13. The incidents were reported first to principal April Smith in May of 2018 with forensic investigation conducted by the Amy Schulze Children’s Advocacy Center investigator, Taylor Parker on May 23rd. Hammock was taken into custody later that evening by Fairfield Police following an interrogation where he admitted on paper to committing the he acts. The jury also heard testimony in the case from the two victims, Officer Justin Titzer, Beth Richard’s, and Jason Hammock himself.
Silas Eckleberry Retires, Honored At Last (Tuesday) Night’s Fairfield City Council Meeting
The Fairfield City Council met for their regular meeting last (Tuesday) night at Fairfield City Hall. Fairfield Police Chief, Keith Colclasure spoke to the council and crowd in attendance on the recent retirement of Silas Eckleberry from the police department. Chief Colclasure stated Eckleberry retires with 35 years of service, beginning his career as a patrol officer in May of 1989 and ending his career on June 28th. During his career, Eckleberry was a member of the Southern Illinois Drug Task Force and also served as Assistant Police Chief and as a Sergeant on the force. Mayor Gary Moore congratulated Eckleberry on his retirement and presented him with a plaque for his years of service.
Three Pleas in Wayne County Court on Tuesday
The guilty pleas were interred in Wayne County Court on Tuesday. 48-year-old Stacey E. Hoke of Fairfield pled guilty to retail theft. VERNON, IL WOMAN AIRLIFTED TO AREA HOSPITAL FOLLOWING VEHICLE ACCIDENT LATE THURSDAY NIGHT
A Vernon, IL woman was airlifted from the scene of a vehicle accident late last (Thursday) night on County HWY 16 at County RD 1600E near the Cisne curve. Wayne County Sheriff’s Department says at 11:58 pm, a 2004 Chevrolet Impala driven by 22-year-old Emily Jenkins was traveling westbound on County HWY 16 when the vehicle for unknown reasons left the roadway and overturned. Jenkins was airlifted by Air Evac helicopter to Deaconness Midtown Hospital in Evansville for treatment of her injuries.
