Samantha Woll murder trial ends with mixed verdict

A Wayne County jury acquitted Michael Jackson-Bolanos of premeditated, first-degree murder in the death of synagogue leader Samantha Woll, the Free Press reports .

The big picture: The jury found him guilty of lying to police but remained deadlocked on felony murder and home invasion charges. They returned a not-guilty verdict on premeditated murder.

    • A July 25 pretrial hearing is scheduled for the two deadlocked counts, according to the Free Press. Prosecutors must decide by next week if they're going to retry the case on those charges.

Between the lines: The more than monthlong trial ended with five days of jury deliberation, Channel 4 reports .

Woll was fatally stabbed last October and discovered near her Lafayette Park home.

What they're saying: The defendant's attorney, Brian Brown, said after the verdicts were read that it was "somewhat of a small, partial victory — but it's not the victory I was anticipating. I feel like the evidence was more than substantial to acquit him of all the charges," according to the Free Press.

    • Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement: "We were hopeful that a decision could reached today, but we will press on for justice for the Wolls and will determine our next course of action at the pre-trial hearing."
    • The Woll family's post-verdict statement held Jackson-Bolanos responsible while vowing to continue seeking justice, the Detroit News reports .
