GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Multiple agencies are searching for a man accused of shooting and killing a police officer over the weekend in Wayne County.

News 8 affiliate WDIV-TV reports Officer Mohamed Said with the Melvindale Police Department was shot and killed on Sunday. Investigators identified a man named Michael Lopez as a suspect.

The Detroit News says the incident happened before noon Sunday when Said was dispatched to a neighborhood on a report of a suspicious person. MPD chief Robert Kennaley told the News that Said found several people with a bunch of bags near a car wash but no vehicle.

“They were just hanging around the car wash with all their bags, and he went in to investigate to get a feel of if they needed help, if they were homeless, just to understand what they were doing there,” Kennaley told The News.

Lopez reportedly took off running, so Said gave chase. Said tried to arrest the suspect while using his Taser, but at some point, shots were fired and Said was struck.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives put out an alert with photos of Lopez. He is in his 40s, has brown hair, brown eyes and is a little over 6 feet tall.

He was last seen riding a green bike and is considered armed and dangerous.

The ATF and Michigan State Police are offering a $20,000 award for information about Lopez’s whereabouts; however, people should not engage with him.

“Police are actively searching for this suspect,” MPD said in a social media post . “If you see this suspect or anyone closely resembling the suspect, please do not approach or confront. Immediately call 911 and inform the police.”
