But Detroit-based public defender Sofia Nelson, who has recently made national headlines due to...
Judge gives man 94 years after rape convictions
An East Toledo man convicted by a jury last week of sexually assaulting three girls — one of them repeatedly over a period of nearly four years — was sentenced Wednesday to at least 94 years in state prison by a Lucas County judge. Antonio Ramirez, 39, of the 2100 block of Bakewell Street, was defiant before Judge Joe McNamara in Lucas County Common Pleas Court, maintaining his innocence and accusing the primary victim of making up everything. Ramirez’s remarks followed a victim statement to the court by that girl, who said she has been ridden with fear, shame, and anxiety that made her suicidal at times and has hobbled her academics and work efforts. “I hope he thinks about me while he rots in jail,” the girl, whose name The Blade is withholding because of the sexual crimes involved, told the court while requesting a maximum sentence. “I’m going to keep telling my story so no child ever thinks what he did was appropriate.”

Mostly sunny skies kick off an uncomfortable Wednesday with highs in the lower 90s and heat indexes in the middle to upper 90s. Scattered storms can’t be ruled out in areas southwest of Toledo this evening. Thursday is equally humid, but with a cloud deck arriving a bit earlier, we don’t tap into as much heat as Wednesday. Scattered storms stick to the afternoon hours, but some may be strong with heavy downpours and gusty winds. The severe threat sticks southwest of our viewing area, but those closer to Fort Wayne may see the stray strong storm Thursday evening. Scattered storms are likely again Friday. The weekend features a bit of rain by the lakeshore and mild/muggy conditions everywhere else.

UM alumni association returns with author’s talk on disinformation
The Toledo branch of the University of Michigan alumni association hosted its first major event in years this week, as roughly 80 people showed up to hear UM law professor Barbara McQuade talk about her new book, Attack From Within: How Disinformation is Sabotaging America. As she began speaking Tuesday at the Maumee branch of the Toledo Lucas County Public Library, Ms. McQuade noticed a man in the front row wearing an Ohio State University shirt. “This shows something right in society,” she said while shaking his hand. “We can have rivalries, we can have friendly rivalries, but we don’t need to be enemies. We can root for Ohio State or we can be right and root for Michigan.” The crowd laughed, but she explained that she was being serious, going on to express concern about growing animosity across partisan lines and how that has led to the erosion of public trust.
