WAYNESBORO — Police responded to the 400 block of James Avenue in Waynesboro on Tuesday morning after gunshots rang out.

According to Capt. Jamie Dunn of the Waynesboro Police Department, one person was killed. A second person, who was injured, is now in custody.

Dunn said the shooting took place at about 9 a.m.

A neighbor near the scene of the shooting told The News Leader he heard three to five gunshots.

Due to a heavy police presence, authorities asked that motorists avoid driving in the area. Part of James Avenue was closed to traffic as police investigated.

Additional details concerning the shooting death could be released later on Tuesday, police said.

The deadly shooting was Waynesboro's second of the year. On Memorial Day weekend, 22-year-old Seth Wallace was shot multiple times on D Street. He died June 12 from his injuries.
