Jasper Drilling explores gender and identity in Shenandoah Valley Art Center exhibit

WAYNESBORO – Jasper Drilling, an accomplished oil painter, delves into the intricate relationship between gender and the body through his evocative self-portraits.

Drilling’s work will be on display at the Shenandoah Valley Art Center, 126 S. Wayne Ave. in Waynesboro through Sept. 28. The exhibit's opening reception is happening 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3.

Reflecting on his experiences growing up queer and trans, Jasper uses his art to navigate and express his identity and emotions on canvas.

A recent graduate with a BA in Studio Art from the University of Mary Washington, Jasper was honored with the Emil R. Schnellock Award in Painting. Based in Richmond, Virginia, his work has been exhibited statewide, including at the esteemed “Made in VA” exhibit.

“Through painting, I express my feelings and perceptions of gender and how I navigate these emotions as a transgender person,” Jasper said. “Using oil paints, I employ vibrant underpaintings, outlines, and rough brush marks to translate my thoughts onto the canvas. My paintings document growing up queer and trans, revealing both the genesis of my transmasculinity and contradictions to who I am today."

Jasper's work offers a powerful reflection of his journey, capturing the complexities of his transmasculine experience and providing profound commentary on gender and identity.

“I reflect on the expectations placed on me to look or act a certain way and channel my vulnerabilities and emotions about my body because of my identity.”

Piper Groves, executive director of SVAC, expressed her enthusiasm for the exhibit:

"We are so proud and honored to host this exhibit. We are here to amplify voices telling stories through visual arts,” Groves said. “Every show we hang tells an important story, and only through inclusive narratives are we able to find compassionate connections. Ultimately, showcasing diverse experiences through art helps create a world where everyone’s story is heard and valued."
