Turtles ahead: Suburban residents shell out to protect neighborhood turtles

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Residents of a neighborhood in Kane County are teaming up to reduce the number of turtles that are run over and killed by drivers.

Turtles in the Sunset Views community, located in Lily Lake, crawl across a road from one pond to another.

Abby Drommerhausen lives in Sunset Views, where she says too many drivers are running over turtles.

"People are just driving too fast, or everyone's in a hurry to, you know, accomplish what they need to for the day,” Drommerhausen said. “They may be distracted by their phone; they may be driving fast to get where they want to get, and if you see a baby turtle — well, [that] you don't see it is the problem — and that's why we see them smashed often.”

Drommerhausen helped set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise $550 to buy and erect "turtle crossing" street signs.

She hopes the signs will get more drivers to slow down in the neighborhood and reduce the number of turtles that are run over and killed.
