NW suburban driver killed, another seriously hurt in wrong-way crash: Police

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A wrong-way collision late Sunday night left a 21-year-old driver dead in the northwest suburbs.

According to Arlington Heights Police, the incident occurred around 10 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Rand Road and Euclid Avenue.

Police believe a purple 2016 Dodge Challenger was driving northwest on Rand Road when it veered into the left-turn lane of southeast Rand and then hit head-on a white 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe.

The driver of the Dodge, a 21-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hyundai driver, an 18-year-old man, was found trapped and needed to be extricated by firefighters.

Police said he suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Lutheran General Hospital.

Rand Road, between Euclid and Schoenbeck Road, was closed for nearly six hours as police surveyed  the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with police attempting to determine if the driver of the Dodge Challenger was speeding as well as under the influence of either alcohol or drugs.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office will be conducting an autopsy along with toxicology testing to determine the cause of death. Police said the final report is expected to arrive in about six to eight weeks.
