(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Joliet Police are investigating the death of a toddler who, they say, was killed by his brother.

The 2-year-old boy, according to police, was stabbed to death by his 6-year-old brother.

Police were called to a home on the 2700 block of Fairway Drive at about 5 p.m. on Friday. They found the 2-year-old had been stabbed multiple times with a kitchen knife.

The child was pronounced dead at Ascension St. Joseph Medical Center.

Police Sgt. Dwayne English says the six-year-old got a hold of a kitchen knife and stabbed his brother multiple times. Their mother was in another room at the time.

Figuring out exactly what happened, the sergeant says, isn’t going to be easy.

“Yes, this is proving very difficult, being so young. So our officers did take that six-year-old male into protective custody and he was transported to the Joliet Police Department.

“He was, you know, the six-year-old was accompanied by family as well. And ultimately, custody of the child was transferred over to DCFS and the child was sent to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.”

He said the officers and paramedics involved should be commended for their compassion in handling the incident.

“We have to commend the response of not only the members of the Joliet Police Department but also the Joliet Fire Department, who responded with such compassion and such professionalism in the wake of such a tragedy.

“This scene, you know, to recollection was one of the most difficult scenes for our officers and for these paramedics to respond to. It's just unfathomable. The level of pain and sorrow that you know, this family must be enduring.”
