(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Lake County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred last night in Wadsworth.

Deputies were sent to Dilleys Road just south of Wadsworth Road at about 11:45 p.m. There was a report of a “person down.”

Deputies found a woman dead in the street.

The Sheriff’s Office said she suffered significant trauma, consistent with being hit by a vehicle.

It was determined she had been riding a bicycle and was hit from behind. She was then thrown into the path of an oncoming car.

The driver of the second vehicle stayed at the scene and is corroborating with the investigation, according to police.

Officials said the driver of an SUV that hit the woman sped away, dragging the bicycle. A short time later a witness reported seeing an SUV dragging a bike.

Police say it was later found at a residence in Winthrop Harbor, miles from the scene with damage consistent with being involved in the crash.

Charges are pending against the 32-year-old man, who police believe was the driver.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office is in the process of identifying the woman killed in the crash.
