(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Two new chicks in the penguin colony at the Shedd Aquarium took the plunge into an important milestone.

Two rockhopper penguin chicks that hatched earlier this summer took their first swim. The chicks, who were hatched on June 18 and 20, shed their fluffy feathers and grew waterproof, sleek ones that allowed for them to swim.

The chicks were behind the scenes practicing, but are now back with their colony and able to be seen by the public.

The aquarium says the next step is to determine the sex of the chicks. That’s when the naming process will begin.
