With contract set to expire, alder says ShotSpotter available at lower cost

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The parent company of Chicago's controversial gunshot detection system is offering to extend the contract Mayor Johnson seems determined to end and lower the costs.

A crowd of alderpersons gathered at City Hall, saying they want to keep the ShotSpotter system and that it’s helped save dozens of lives by alerting police more quickly to aid gunshot victims.

Fifteenth Ward Alderman Raymond Lopez said SoundThinking, the parent company, is addressing criticisms about the cost.

“ShotSpotter sent this to the administration a week ago, extending the service contract through 2025,” claimed Lopez. “This offer is a 48 percent reduction in the fees associated with this technology. How can the mayor ignore this cost-savings that will also save lives.”

Within the last 24 hours, Mayor Johnson ridiculed ShotSpoter, calling the system “walkie-talkies on a pole.” He insists the Council doesn’t have the power to preserve or renew the contract.

The alders say otherwise.
