(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Michelin Star can be the crowning achievement for a chef or the owner of a restaurant. It could also be the beginning of the end.

Izzy Kharasch, president of Hospitality Works in Chicago, told the Noon Business Hour, a Michelin star is the source of international attention. It also means that businesses have to meet those expectations.

“People watch for Michelin stars. And as soon as they see a new restaurant that has one, they flock to it from, really, all over the world,” Kharasch said.

The pressure of the bright lights of the Michelin Star is combined with the pressure that comes with maintaining that distinction. Kharasch said that can be an impossible combination.

“Hard to achieve. And as I said, very hard to maintain.”

That stress can lead to burnout in chefs, line cooks and staff.
