(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Illinois State Police (ISP) has opened an investigation after officers shot and killed a driver following a nearly 15-mile chase on Friday night in Aurora.

The pursuit started in Plano, Illinois, officials said. Deputies with the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office were called to assist local police as they responded to a call of shots fired.

Plano police said a man had been shot to death inside of a residence on Pratt Street near Klatt Street. On Sunday, that victim was identified as Russell Novak, 70.

Police located a vehicle that they believed belonged to someone who was involved in the shooting — but the driver took off.

The pursuit went on for miles. Several agencies were involved. It ended at Route 34 and Eola Road in Aurora.

There, according to the sheriff’s office, deputies and police “encountered an armed subject.”

In a statement provided to WBBM Newsradio, an ISP spokesperson said the suspect and officers began shooting at each other. The suspect was struck, and officials with the Kendall County Sheriff's Office said no officers were injured in the shooting.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead, according to ISP.

It’s unclear how many officers fired or whether the suspect fired at them. ISP said its investigation is "still in its infancy" and added no other details will be released at this time.
