CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Chicago Police watchdog is investigating an overnight fatal crash on the South Side that they say stemmed from a pursuit of robbery suspects.

According to the Chicago Police, the accident occurred shortly before 2 a.m., at the intersection of 35th and Ashland, in the McKinley Park neighborhood.

CPD said officers were responding to a robberies call near 55th and Pulaski when they saw two suspects, believed to be armed, getting into a black Lexus sedan.

When officers approached, the Lexus fled, speeding away, police said.

The officers then began to chase the Lexus. Shortly into the pursuit, the Lexus, traveling north on Ashland, ran a red light and was hit by a KIA SUV, police said.

The driver of the Lexus, an adult man, was ejected from his vehicle. The Lexus then plowed into a building at 34th and Ashland, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A male passenger in the Lexus suffered an injury to his leg and was transported to Stroger Hospital, police said.

The driver of the KIA hurt their hand and was sent to the University of Chicago Medical Center.

    No other injuries were reported.

Police said two weapons were recovered at the scene.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability are handling the investigation.
