CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Chicago police officer and a 16-year-old boy were both shot during an arrest on the city's South Side Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling said it was about 12:30 p.m. when officers approached a 16-year-old boy for what he described as an "investigative stop" near 56th Street and Shields Avenue.

During the stop, Snelling said officers discovered that the teenager was armed. As they tried to disarm him, the gun accidentally fired a single bullet, which struck the teen in the groin and the officer in the leg.

Both the officer and the teenager were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Snelling said both individuals are in stable condition.

The superintendent said the shooting was a reminder that "lives are always at risk" in police work.

"It is an extremely dangerous job," he said.

Mayor Brandon Johnson was also in attendance to brief the media. He told reporters he was grateful that everyone was in stable condition and added that too many people have access to guns.

The police officer who was shot was hired to the department in 2018.
