Dolton's former acting police chief indicted on federal bankruptcy charges

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A federal grand jury in Chicago handed up a nine-count indictment against the man who — until last week — served as the acting police chief of Dolton.

Prosecutors said 61-year-old Lewis Lacey plotted to hide his assets and filed a fraudulent bankruptcy claim in order to keep from paying a lawsuit settlement.

Monday’s grand jury decision came four months after federal prosecutors accused another senior Dolton administrator of committing bankruptcy fraud

It all appears to be part of a growing investigation into Dolton's finances, which focus on allegations of wrongdoing against Mayor Tiffany Henyard, who's also the supervisor of nearby Thornton Township.

Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said her investigation of Dolton's finances found that the village is $3.5 million in debt.

Village trustees voted last week to put Lacey on administrative leave, but he returned to work a day later and claimed that the board did not have jurisdiction.

There's been no comment yet from the village of Dolton.
