A recent report shows some troubling numbers could be on the horizon when it comes to healthcare outcomes among men worldwide.

Researchers in Australia say that they expect a dramatic rise in male cancer fatalities over the next 25 years.

The report says they forecast an almost doubling in diagnosed cancer in men from the 2022 total of 10.3 million to 19 million by 2050. And the number of men who will die from cancer is predicted to increase by 93% from 5.4 million two years ago to 10.5 million in 2050.

The study took into account 30 different cancer types and population data from 185 different countries and territories. The report was published in Cancer, the American Cancer Society’s peer-reviewed journal.

As for the cause, the study points to higher rates of smoking and alcohol usage in men over women, a higher likelihood that men will experience carcinogen exposure at work, and a lower likelihood to get a cancer screening.

Lung, prostate and colorectal cancer are the three biggest types of cancer expected to cause the spike in male cancer fatalities.
