(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Illinois drivers will soon be able to spend less time at the DMV thanks to a newly signed law.

The legislation, sponsored by State Senator Dan McConchie of Hawthorn Woods, gives Illinois motorists the traditional four-year license renewal option for $30 or an eight-year option for $60.

“What this does is just allows for people to have that kind of longevity,” McConchie said.  “It’s something they don’t have to worry about for an extended period of time.”

Senate Bill 275, which received unanimous approval in Springfield, will require the Secretary of State’s Office to implement the new process by 2027, but McConchie is hoping change comes even sooner.

“This does not apply to those people who may have to go back and have regular testing because of tickets or so forth,” McConchie added. “For those people who are good drivers, it just allows them to not have to go into the DMV nearly as often and be able to engage in other productive things with their time. I think all of us can think of better things to do with our time than going into the DMV.”
