(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After better than expected revenue, Elk Grove residents are getting gift cards from the village.

Elk Grove Village just delivered $200 gift cards to all 14,000 households.

That is all thanks to a new data center boom that has given better than expected revenue from new construction permits.

The program, dubbed Shop Elk Grove, is part of the village's fourth pandemic relief effort.

The village website encourages everyone to keep the cash circulating in town. Mayor Craig Johnson says that's a win-win – local businesses thrive and residents get a little extra cash to spend.

“These gift cards can be used to offset back-to-school costs and other household expenses like groceries and gasoline thanks to the fourth residential economic relief initiative by the Village in the last few years, totaling $12 million in economic relief delivered directly to residents,” a post from the Village of Elk Grove reads.
