(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Legal challenges may have slammed the door on President Biden’s latest attempt to cancel student loan debt, but they have also opened the door for scammers.

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul is warning people with college debt not to respond to emails, texts or solicitations promising student loan forgiveness or lower monthly payments.

The offers, he says, usually come with upfront fees and claims to be connected with the U.S. Department of Education.

That’s the agency you should reach out to if you're looking for free help. You could also contact the company that’s servicing your loan, Raoul says.

Anyone with questions is asked to contact the AG’s office.
